Personal Details

Matthew attended school at Somerset College in the Western Cape, where he graduated in 2009, before continuing his education at the University of Cape Town in 2010, where he obtained a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with first class honours in 2013. Matthew's final year project involved the design and manufacturing of a small prototype two-stage light gas gun. During this project, Matthew began working with BISRU, and subsequently decided to continue working with BISRU, registering for an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 2014.

Current Research

Supervisor: Prof. G. Nurick

Matthew is currently completing coursework as part of his M.Sc degree, and is still in the process of determining the scope of his research for his dissertation. However, his main field of interest lies in numerical modelling, and his proposed research topic will involve characterising a damage model for metals. Specifically, he is interested in performing tensile Hopkinson bar tests to characterise the Bao & Wierzbicki ductile failure criteria.
