Christopher Long

Christopher is currently engaged in postgraduate studies where he is completing his MSc(Eng) in structural crashworthiness at the Blast Impact and Survivability Research Unit at the University of Cape Town.

He began his engineering studies at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2007. After obtaining a national diploma in mechanical engineering with cum laude in 2009 he worked at Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg section as an engineer in training for 2 years. During this time he was exposed to a broad range of operations from vertical shaft mining to concentrators, smelters and metal refining plants. He was subsequently recognised as best in-service trainee during this time. After deciding to further his education he returned to academia in 2011 to commence his degree studies at the University of Cape Town. In his final undergraduate year of study he chose a project in the field of computational fluid dynamics, titled “Transonic Aeroelastic Response Characterisation & Reduced Order Modelling”, under the supervision of Associate Professor Arnaud Malan. He subsequently obtained a BSc(Eng) in mechanical engineering with first class honours in 2013.

Current Research

Although still in the process of scoping his project under the supervision of Professor Genevieve Langdon, his field of research will involve the establishment of appropriate design methodologies so as to improve occupant protection during a vehicle collision. This involves the assessment of varying material types including composite materials as well as structural configurations that maximize occupant protection, whilst minimizing weight and production costs. The work will involve the numerical modelling as well as experimental testing of mechanical structures to determine the crashworthiness for various modes of transportation or related systems and components.
